Maria Elvira Salazar (FL-27)
Republican Maria Elvira Salazar is hoping to hold on to the south Florida district after first winning election in 2020. In her first year in office, Salazar voted for a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers and showed vocal support for Cuban refugees. She even introduced pro-immigrant legislation. However, Salazar’s efforts appear to be political maneuvering not leadership or a real commitment to immigrant communities. Salazar has not explained how she can move her bill when the leader of the House GOP caucus, Kevin McCarthy, said pro-immigrant legislation was a “nonstarter.” She has remained silent as Florida Governor lied to Venezuela asylum seekers for a dehumanizing political stunt. She was silent as the Lt. Governor suggested bussing Cuban migrants out of the state. She was silent as the Florida Republican party attacked the legislation to protect Dreamers she supported. And she has been silent as her party has embraced same racist “invasion” conspiracies as the racist mass murderer who attacked El Paso in 2019 and Buffalo in May. Salazar even accepted $10,000 from Elise Stefanik’s superPAC after she doubled down on those deadly conspiracies.
